The message that left me running laps

It's my first game in Marseille.

The play comes in: "Mike, Veet, de gauche, Mistral, Cross, Burst, Veet, Veet."

Part English, part French, Marseille accent over everything. Mouthpiece in. Three voices at once.

I have no idea what to do.

So, I learned some French that season... but before I could speak it, I had to play football in it. Before I could figure out the language, I had to figure out which part of the call was even for me.

By the end of that season, I was the one calling plays.
American accent. Franglais (muddled French & English) vocabulary. Yelling everything out before I put my mouthpiece in.

One afternoon in practice, I called a play wrong.
The whole defense blitzed the coach. No offensive line. Nowhere to hide.

I ran a lot of laps that day.

The assistant coach didn't take me back to the whiteboard.

He took me to the metro. The market. Anywhere loud and distracting. He called plays. I listened. I called them back. We stopped assuming anything was understood.

I think about that a lot when I'm working on marketing & sales (my own and with clients).

Because I do this too.

We give people the shortcode. The system. The insider language...and none of that means anything to them.

If your marketing and sales aren't landing...your message might not be as clear as you think.

One of the best tools I've found for getting clear and cutting through all the noise is StoryBrand (especially the new 5 Soundbites). It forces you to ask, "What does the customer actually need to hear?"

You've got this...but I'm here if you need a coach on the metro.

Making work a lot more like play. Whether you are running a business, leading a team, burned out, or bored...there's a better way to do it. Survival is insufficient.

Yesterday I hinted at something, Reader. Today it's real. I've launched a podcast called Doing Business with ADHD…and the first couple episodes are live right now. I co-host it with my friend Caleb Bogia-Curles, a Certified Financial Planner who works almost exclusively with ADHD entrepreneurs. We both have ADHD. We both run businesses. We've both spent a lot of time figuring out why the standard playbook kept falling short. The show is for business owners and founders who are late-diagnosed,...

I've been doing something a little different lately, Reader. You know me mostly as the guy who talks about revenue, marketing, doodling, and the messy reality of running a business. That's not changing. But I've been having a lot of conversations with clients, with peers, with people I respect…that keep circling back to the same thing. The way most business advice is built doesn't work for a lot of us. Not because we're not trying. Because the systems were never designed for the way our...

I’m loving this Pacers run!!! I grew up in Indy watching Reggie Miller “choke” Knicks fans and hit daggers from the arc. It was gritty. Loud. Classic. But this go-around feels different Reader. During the last game, my son looked up and said, “Hali’s shot is kinda… odd.” Yep. Tyrese Haliburton’s jumper IS funky. Low release, wide base, strangely far from his body…it looks like something a coach would fix in middle school. Scouts questioned it when he was going pro. Skeptics said it wouldn’t...
